YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING

These instructor-led courses are designed to help Scouters learn how to effectively carry out their Scouting roles. In most cases, completing the course will make a Scouter “trained” for the role(s) covered in the course. E-learning versions of some courses may be found below in the E-learning section.

Youth Protection training is designed to help you keep our youth safe from abuse. You will learn the Scouting America’s Youth Protection Guidelines, signs of abuse, and how to report suspected abuse. After each section of material, you will answer questions about that section’s topic. Completion is noted automatically in the Scouting America training records database if the module is experienced online.

Train the trainer

While not required, The Fundamentals of Training is the first part of the three-part train-thetrainer continuum (T3) in Scouting and is intended for both youth and adult trainers. This session is designed to introduce new Scouting trainers to teaching techniques and skills.

Trainer’s Edge

The purpose of the Trainer’s EDGE course is to provide and help develop the platform skills of a trainer. It is meant to supplement the practice offered through Wood Badge and NYLT staff development, with a focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands‐on experience in methods and media.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is an advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Scouters from Cub Scouting, Scouting America, Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Explorers, and district and council Scouters all are welcome and belong here. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)

The purpose of the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) course is to teach Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and the organizational and leadership skills needed to most effectively reach success in that role.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC)

The Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews Course (ILSC) has been created to help Venturers learn and practice the attitudes and skills that good leaders demonstrate. The course is a series of lessons divided into three modules: Leading Self, Leading Others, and Leading Crews.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Ships (ILSS)

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Ships Training (ILSS) is an interactive program for Skippers to provide newly elected and appointed Sea Scouts with initial training on their responsibilities, and to equip them with leadership and management abilities to effectively run their ship.

Den Chief Training

A Den Chief serves as a Scouting role model for the Cub Scouts in the den, as well as the entire pack, and encourages the transition of Webelos Scouts into Scouting America. Den chief training is designed to build on each of these ideas using a framework that will allow the new den chief, or perhaps the experienced den chief looking for new ideas, to have fun and learn the role.

National Youth Leadership Training

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

All Den and Troop POSITION-SPECIFIC COURSES

SCOUTMASTER POSITION-SPECIFIC TRAINING

The instructor’s guide below is intended to be used by trainers leading Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training. The course will provide Scoutmasters with the basic information and tools they need to lead successful Scouting America troops. Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters shoud complete this course, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, and Youth Protection Training.

INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS (IOLS)

Working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank. Along with Scoutmaster Specifics this course is required of all direct contact leaders registered in Scouting America Troops and Varsity Scout Teams, in order to be considered “trained”.

CUB SCOUT LEADER TRAINING

CUBMASTER AND ASSISTANT CUBMASTER POSITION-SPECIFIC TRAINING

The link below is to the instructor guide that is to be used by trainers in presenting the stand-alone Cubmaster and assistant Cubmaster position-specific course. This course is intended to provide Cubmasters with the information and tools they need to successfully lead a Cub Scout pack. Cubmasters and assistants who complete this training and Youth Protection training are considered “trained” for both positions.

BALOO TRAINING

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping overnighters and Webelos den overnighters. BALOO training is comprised of two components—an online component and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdoor leader.

PACK COMMITTEE CHALLENGE—PACK COMMITTEE POSITION-SPECIFIC TRAINING

The Pack Committee Challenge is designed for pack committees and is the course (along with Youth Protection training) pack committee members need to be considered “trained.” The instructor’s guide below is for trainers to conduct the course for pack committee members.

VENTURING ADVISOR POSITION-SPECIFIC TRAINING

Below is the instructor’s guide for the Venturing crew Advisor and assistant training. The course will provide an introduction to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful Venturing crew leadership experience.

CREW COMMITTEE CHALLENGE—CREW COMMITTEE POSITION-SPECIFIC TRAINING

The Crew Committee Challenge is designed for crew committee members and becomes the course (along with the Venturing version of Youth Protection training) crew committee members need to be considered “trained.” The instructor’s guide below is for trainers to conduct the course for crew committee members.
